The Storms Of Life

You never know what the storms of life will bring you.. after the rain and howling wind settles down, and the night is over, there is a new dawn, where the sun rises and a new day begins.

For my husband and I , we faced our storm recently. A huge line of rain and wind blew through our state about 10 days ago, and it took with it part of our roof and the eaves of our house (the sides of the roof). Our house is now unliveable and the city came by and condemned it. They told us that we had to move from there because the house is too damaged to live in.

My husband has lived in this house since the early 90's.. I moved here in 2005. We have had many good times here and our cats know this place as their home. I brought Shadow kitty here when he was just a baby, and the other cats...well, they were born here and have spent their entire life here, playing in the yard, wondering through the woods, and sleeping by my side.

Their playmate, Momma Kitty died here at home after living for 17 years, and we buried her by the riverside where she could be at peace, where the last rays of the sun could touch the ground where she lays. Sometimes in the morning the cats and I wake up together after snuggling all night long and we watch the sunrise and listen to the birds play, while I sip my coffee. When the night falls, sometimes we walk to the shoreline and watch the sun set over the edge of the Halifax river, where we can all be together, just us, the earth, and our spirits as one.

We have had good times here.. My husband proposed to me here in this home, on bended knee. We built our life together here, collecting the things that we loved. I've built three altars here, and I created the Satanas Shop here, too. We made it our cozy little home. It's sentimental, I suppose, but it is where we love to be.

But, now we have to go. And we just don't know where we are going to go to. The storm that devastated our house took part of the roof with it and left the yard a mess. Our house wasn't the only one that got ruined that fateful night, though. There were other homes in the area that also took damage, too. The winds that ripped through here were nearly 70mph and the rain blew sideways as the wind howled that night. The next morning the city code enforcement came to our door and posted that notice that told us that we would have to leave.

We never expected to have to move, but throughout all of this I am trying to see this as a new opportunity to leave this place and start a new life. We have been looking for another house that we can live in, preferably one in the same area that has a yard - or one that isn't too close to the street, so that my cats can be safe. I know Shadow kitty and his adventurous nature, and he would dart across the street to chase a bird or another cat, if we lived too close to the street's edge. I have lived in a house that was close to a street and I lost two beloved pets that way, so I fear for his safety. He is young and active but my other two furbabies are too lazy (and well-fed) to run like he does.

We need a two-bedroom house, so that we can use the spare room for my Dance Stuido, and also for a home office and room for my Satanas Shop. We can't get an apartment - all though an apartment would be easier to find, but my cats have lived their entire lives with the freedom of the outdoors and I just couldn't entrap them indoors, it wouldn't be fair to their free spirits. And its difficult to live in an apartment as a Satanist. I've had a landlord who refused to enter into my apartment to have it bugged and cleaned because they didn't like my Satanic house decorations! I thought it was rude!

Our limited funds at this time make this search all the more difficult. I am working full time at a job that I took last week, and while it will provide for us, it's just not enough to get us where we need to be by the end of this month, I fear. My husband - the sweet loving Taurus that he is, always worked hard all of his life but his health got the best of him recently.

Now he is disabled, he has diabetic neuropathy that makes it difficult for him to walk. He is always in pain, its so hard for him to get around. He got fired for his disability and we are pursuing a discrimination suit because his employer was foolish enough to give him a dismissal letter stating that he was being fired for being disabled! Where we live that is against the law. And my husband, in between constant doctors visits, is working towards getting his SSID, (and that will be helpful), but that may not come to pass for 12-18 months down the road. His unemployment only pays for his health insurance to cover his doctors visits and medications, and it's only tempoary.

The Satanas Shop, and a few of the other online shops that I have were an excellent secondary source of income, where I could help provide for us, save a little on the side and do what I LOVE to do - all at the same time. But now, without an address, I can't run my business and I have to put it aside for a while until we get a permanent address. When it rains, it pours. I've had to put my shop and dancing site on hold so that we can pack our things and find a new place to stay, wherever that new place may be.

I suppose that a change had to come. This house is old, and it no longer suits our needs.. and its time for a new direction, a new day is dawning and with it, a new hope that with time, everything will be better than before. This will be a tough road to walk for the next few months, and while I put my Satanas Shop on hold, and some of my other projects on the back burner, I will have to get my life, (and our lives!) back in order.

It's my mission to make sure that me, my husband, and our furbabies find a place that we can be happy and comfortable with - a place that we can call home... and I hope that this comes to pass as quickly as possible. I'm working 5 days a week to make sure that I can contribute what I can and in the meantime, I've been slowly packing what we will take with us and leaving the rest behind.

I want to thank my fans for always being there for me, for following my work all of these years and I also want everyone to know that I haven't given up on the goals that I have set for myself now, and in the future. I will have more time to work on my book now that my Shop isn't open for the next few months, and I am trying to keep a positive frame of mind even though I am surrounded by devistation at this moment. My life feels like a phoenix that will rise from the ashes of what has become and through this, me, my family and everyone who knows me will become stronger for what has become.

New Items, Jar Candles and Refills

Been waiting to add this item to the shop for a while! These are the new Jar Candles and jar candle refills. They are 7x2 inch beeswax candles made jsut for altar and magic use. They come in all the colors so they can be used for whatever purpose is needed.

I have used candles like these to do ongoing spells. A friend of mine gave me a white candle that I burned while my husband was undergoing healing. I burned this white candle on my Venus Altar. You can see pictures of my altar and candle burning to Venus in my youtube video, The Goddess Venus . I believe that the candle that was given to me in a time of need helped us to be stronger and it allowed us to both heal together.

You can purchase these candles without the glass or purchase the set, with the candle already poured into the glass. If you purchase the candles with the glass you can always get additional candles to use as a refill.

You can also carve your candle with symbols, words, or sigils. Dress and anoint your candle with magical oils and herbs. Use them as a focal point for your altar. Take a photograph and tape it to the side of the candle to create a spell. There are so many useful ways to use these candles and they are sure to be a useful accessory for your altar.

Introducing the new categories at the Satanas Shop:

Beauty and Bath:
Since I'm always working with oils and other natural products, I decided to create a line of bath and beauty products. The nice thing about these items is that some of them can be used before spell work, to capture the essences of certain herbs and other natural substances, and to enhance spell work.

Some of the items that I have added are the Dead Sea Salt Scrub which is not only useful for exfoliating and renewing the skin, but its a natural way to stay healthy. Some of the formulas contain dried herbs (some of which are from my new herb garden!) Use your (herbal) salts for magic, too.

Another item is the Brown Sugar and Honey scrub which is made with pure sweet organic honey, and organic brown sugar. It leaves the skin glowing, soft and moisturized.

These products are made with all-natural ingredients, and they don't contain the harmful chemicals that can be found (unfortunately) in brand-name products.

New Candles at the Satanas Shop

Introducing the new candles available at the Satanas Shop..

Beeswax Taper Candles
Today, I added some new photos of the beautiful beeswax candles at the shop. Beeswax is natural and it smells divine when it is burning. Along the way, I discovered that when beeswax is burned, like in a candle, it has the effect of positively charging the negative ion particles in the air. It also burns cleanly, and does not drip unlike some candles. The Satanas Shop beeswax candles are hand rolled and they fit into the mini candle holders at the Satanas Shop.

New Votive Colors
I also added some new candle colors in the Votives section. The Black color is the most popular, followed by the Red, but I am sure that you will find a good magical and ritual use for the other colors that are now available. For the list of candle colors and spell influences, visit the Articles Index page to read about Candle Colors by Association. The new colors are purple, blue, orange, and green.

Along with this I added some great votive candle holders too, one style in a dazzling triangle shape and other styles in colored glass, all at affordable prices. The Satanas Shop votives fit in these candle holders.

It is recommended that burning a votive in a candle holder lets you enjoy your candle burning for a lot longer than if you burned it without a holder. The challenge in using votive holders is that it can be tricky to get the wax out after you burn them. You could crack or damage the glass if you try to dig it out with a knife. Instead, place your candle holder in the freezer for a few minutes, and the used and melted wax will separate from the glass and slide right out.

MAKING A HERBAL OIL FOR MAGIC

Sometimes you want to create your own oils for magical use. It is easy to create a natural herbal oil to use. A herbal oil is created by combining a carrier oil along with selected fresh or dried herbs. Sometimes you want to create a herbal oil in place of an essential oil to capture the essence of earth. A magical oil that you create yourself has your own powers and associations created with it, so it can be a useful tool in magic and rituals. These ingredients can be easily found at any store.

All you will need is:
Some clean jars with an airtight lid
70% isopropyl alcohol
Fresh or dried herbs
Carrier Oil
Cheesecloth
Dark storage space

The best time to start a recipe like this is on the day or night of a full moon. First, decide what kind of oil you would like to make. A simple start would be a Sage herbal oil, that could be used in a spell for wisdom or knowledge, for example. Once you know what kind of herbs you would like to use, then its time to choose a carrier oil.

A good oil that goes with sage is olive oil (Venus), as it blends well with herbal scents, but sunflower oil (Sun) would be appropriate as well. Once you have your herb and carrier oil selected, then get your jars.

You want to make sure that your jar has a lid that is air-tight. Any excess air flow will degrade your oil, possibly making it spoil. Put your dried or fresh herbs into the jar, filling it almost to the top, wile leaving some room. Add your oil into this and stir it around to get the air bubbles out. You will be surprised at how much air can get trapped within it, and its important to get the oil in contact with all of the herb so they can absorb into each other.

Once that is finished, add a *tiny* bit of 70% isopropyl alcohol, perhaps only a few drops to condition the oil and to keep it from spoiling and to help the herb blend with the oil. You don't want too much alcohol because it will cut your oil into water when the alcohol has dried after time, and it could be irritant.

Some witches recommend using vodka, but I have found that regular rubbing alcohol, (used very conservatively) works just as well and has a cleaner scent. Remember that any kind of alcohol is volatile and flammable, and oil is flammable as well, so use reasonable caution in handling them near any fire or flame.

When your jar is filled, find a dark hiding place to keep it in, and leave it there for a full phase of the moon (about 28 days). This gives your oil time to brew in the dark and out of sight.

If you use dried herbs it is a good idea to check on your oil once in a while and shake it gently so that the herb can dissolve into the oil. When you are ready to use the oil you will want to transfer it to another clean jar. The best place to do this is in the kitchen at the sink. Glass jars and oil are slippery.

Decide if you want to keep some of the herb as you put it into the other jar. If you do not, it does not matter, it is all right either way you choose. Carefully strain the mixture through your cheesecloth. It takes a while to do this but once you do, you will have a jar of fresh herbal oil that you can use for your magic. An oil that is carefully crafted like this could be used for a months, if not longer.

This is the same process that I have used to create some of my own personal oils. For instance, I created a fiery cinnamon oil using this method, and a peppery Mars black pepper oil for magic as well, and I will be glad to have them to use when the need arises. I find that it is a natural solution in crafting magic, and easy to do as well.

*Remember to use any oil with caution. Test for skin sensitivity by doing a patch test (on the inside of your wrist) at least 24 hrs before you use a new oil. If your oil is too strong dilute it with your carrier oil.

BAPHOMET OIL

Baphomet Oil
The Baphomet is a symbolic creature that represents the essence of Satanic Spirituality. It is a half goat-androgynous figure that has been illustrated in many occult manuals as an image of Satan. The Baphomet is a deity to some who worship her for what she represents. I have come to recognize the baphomet as a spiritual, magical image that illustrates the balance between nature, humans, animals, magic, religion, and spirituality.

Baphomet Oil is a spiritual oil that creates a calm, focused environment. Use this oil to self-anoint or for magic work, or in an oil burner during meditation. It has an association with all four elements so it is a balanced fragrance that stimulates the mind and the spirit. The intent of this oil is to create balance, to dissolve past association, and to bring about manifestation, so it is a good overall mixture to use in meditation.

Baphomet Oil is a balanced scent with earthy undertones. It has a base of patchouli that captures the essence of the earth element, and to this is added the vibrant qualities of lavender, the spiritual scent of amber, and the dark and feminine scent of Jasmine. It is a herbal and fragrant scent. The patchouli is an earthly scent that is grounding, the lavender is calming and focusing, the amber is uplifting and spiritual and the jasmine, a lunar element, blends well with all of these scents. All of these aromas are intended to bring balance and focus.

Unlike some spiritual scents, this formula is not too overpowering that it is distracting, it is subtle enough that it will aid you in concentration and it will be uplifting as well. Because it combines all of the elements in a harmonious way it is excellent for balancing. You can add all of these qualities to your spell work to help you to obtain what you desire.

This oil should be made on a Saturday for its association with Saturn. Start with a base of vitamin e oil, perhaps 1/2 an ounce if you want some to store for later. Add to this 4 drops of patchouli, 3 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Amber and 1 drop of Jasmine. Store this in an airtight jar if necessary or use it immediately in spell work.

While you mix these oils it is appropriate to think of the qualities of Baphomet. While you do this, your oil will be charged and ready to use, no need to consecrate it. If you burn this with candle spells, it would be best to use a Black candle for its association with Saturn.

RED SATYR OIL

Red Satyr Oil
The Satyr was the Greek and Romans as a half goat, half man (sometimes woman) creature known for it's erotic and playful nature. This magical, mythical creature was known for its powers of seduction and attraction. The original was created by Aleister Crowley, when he combined civet musk, and ambergris to create a very animal scent that he called "Ruthvah", The perfume of Immortality", after the arabic 'ru hiyat' meaning 'the spirit of life' .

This Red Satyr Oil works as a great aphrodisiac for men. Use this oil sparingly on the self and in ritual candle burning. Because of its Mars/Mercury association, it will attract a lover, whether male or female, so in spell work with this oil, be specific about what results that you want to obtain. The intent of this satanic magical oil is to bring or attract a (passionate) lover to you.

Red Satyr Oil is a bold herbal scent with an undertone of cinnamon. To this is added the sweet aroma of vanilla. The cinnamon is the fire of passion, a natural aphrodisiac related to Mars and masculinity, combined with Vanilla, related to Mercury, as a soothing and stimulating aroma to enable smooth communication, and Lavender, related to Mercury, as the herbal, earthy scent that endears trust and comfort. All of these things are used as a focus to increase attraction, receptivity and interest.

This mixture is not too flowery or sweet, it is balanced and subtle while bringing out the 'fiery' quality of cinnamon. It is empowering without being too strong. You can add all of these qualities to your spell work to help you to obtain what you desire.

This oil should be made on a Tuesday for its association with Mars. Begin with a base of vitamin e oil, perhaps 1/2 an ounce if you want some to store for later, and add to this 4 drops of Vanilla, 3 drops of cinnamon, and 2 drops of Lavender. This recipe uses no animal musk but you are free to add that to the mix if you like working with animal scents. Store this in an airtight jar if necessary or use it immediately in spell work.

While you mix these oils it is appropriate to think of your target, and to think of your intent. As you do this while you create your oil, your oil will be empowered with your magic. No need to charge it afterward or consecrate it. To use it on candles, anoint the candle while you focus on your intent; a red candle works best for its fiery Mars association.

HOW TO USE MAGICAL OILS

Oils can be used in rituals in several different ways: The OIL represents the spirit or essence of a specific energy. So, using the oil in a ritual adds a certain effect to your magical working.

Anointing a Candle
Oil can used to anoint a candle before a spell is cast. Anointing a candle is easy - simply hold your candle and rub the oil onto it while you focus on the effect that you want to create. Let your candle sit for a few moments before you light it. Oil is flammable so be careful when working around heat and flame.

Self-Anointing
Dilute your oil with a carrier oil, such as a mixture of olive oil or almond oil, and add a pinch of your favorite herb. While you do your ritual focus on the energies of the oil and anoint yourself on your forehead (3rd eye), and upon your heart. This is symbolic of being anointed with the energies of the oil in your heart and in your spirit. Carefully use your oil to anoint magical objects and sacred spaces. Some oils are intense and should not be used on the skin unless they are diluted in a carrier oil in a great amount.

Oil Diffuser or Burner
Place a few drops of oil in a burner or diffuser and enjoy the scent of your oil as it surrounds you during your ritual. Fill your diffuser with water and place 3-4 drops of your favorite oil into the water, light a tea light candle and place it below in the burner. As your oil warms it will move the scent through the air as you do your ritual or perform your magic.

Looking forward to upgrading the shop to a shopping cart system. I think it will be easier to run the shop, and I can add more products a lot faster and keep track of things a lot better. Whats also nice about it, is that its a better shopping experience. I noticed that using the google checkout was becomming a chore, because it didn't have it's own cart. now, no matter which service you use (paypal, google or money order) you can check out easily and quickly.

This design to the left is the outline of a playful dancing satyr printed onto a cute Babydoll tee. Satyrs represented the spirit of the forest and the lustful desires of humans and nature. it was said by the Greeks that if one was to get lost in the woods that the satyrs would find you and seduce you with their magic. Venus Satanas has been a Satanist since 1992, after she discovered Satanism at the local library when she found a book on the Church of Satan. This book inspired her to walk the left-hand path. She created a ritual dedication to Satan and to Satanism at the age of thirteen. She studied and practiced Satanism and various forms of witchcraft and magic.

Venus created portrait and wildlife art for sale while working as a street artist in St. Augustine Florida from 1998-2001. She works in the realist style using color pencil, pastel graphite, and charcoal. Her career as a street artist in St. Augustine ended with the unfair supreme court decision against the artists of St. Augustine in 2001 - stating that music and art could not be displayed or created in public within the city.

Many years had passed since her Satanic dedication, and she created her website, SpiritualSatanist.com to share her ideas and experiences with other Satanists and seekers of the left hand path. Venus Satanas also produces videos at YouTube since 2007, with many subscribers [currently over 3,000!] who are interested in learning about the Occult and Satanism.

Venus also has a personal blog, Spiritual Satanist where she posts information about Satanism and the occult. In 2009, Venus opened the Satanas Shop, to showcase and sell her Satanic art and merchandise all over the world.

She has also produced a video, "Spiritual Satanism", and the research book "The Al-Jilwah for Satanists", both published by Lulu. Symbols of Satan - The Bessy Pentagram

This is part of my Series on Satanic Symbolism -

The Bessy Pentagram [shown on right] is one of many versions of the Baphomet that is so familiar to Satanists. It was from the book known as the History of Witchcraft and the Supernatural, written by Maurice Bessy. The symbol itself goes back much further than that but it had always been associated with Satan and the forces of the Underworld. It is a known fact that LaVey drew up his own version of this pentagram and baphomet, and took from it the same elements of design, including the "Leviathan" word that encircles the symbol. Due to the popularization of this symbol as 'Satanic' it is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Satanism, much like the adoption of the Roman Cross became a Symbol of Christianity after 400ad.

The controversy over this symbol exists even within Satanism. While the Church of Satan claims to own copyright on this specific symbol, the simple truth is, that they do not. The original Bessy pentagram and all earlier versions of it are in the public domain. Public domain images can not be copyrighted. Now that it is an internationally recognized symbol of Satanism in general it is most certainly in the public domain as a religious symbol, which can not be copyrighted either. The Satanic Church does have their own specific version of this symbol which is known as the LaVeyan pentagram.

LaVey had little regard from which he took his inspiration from, piecing together his versions of Satanism from various odd sources. Within the Church of Satan the book written by Bessy was used as a prop, much like LaVey adopted the Bessy pentagram for symbolic purposes.

The 'Leviathan' spelled in Jewish letters surrounding the symbol came from an earlier versions of the Baphomet, found in various books. In the 1700's there was a symbol of the Baphomet within a circle in the book 'The History of Magic'. This symbol was paired with the upright pentagram [or as some call it, the pentacle] around this were the words 'Samael and Lilith' and it is often referred to as the Samael and Lilith Pentagram. Its purpose was to illustrate the unholy union of Samael, the Jewish angel of Death, and Lilith, the Queen of Demons in jewish mythology.

All of these symbols - the goat, the names of Jewish demons, point to the obvious connection between Satanism and Judaism. Even deeper than its christian association, the Judaic aspects of satanism are represented by the Goat - known as Azazel.. this was the Scapegoat of tradition that was sacrificed to the wild, who carried the sins of the people. it was natural then to associate and contrast the Jewish goat with the christian sheep, the natural reaction of Christians being that the goat represents evil, or the devil. This tradition has continued to this day.

CANDLE SAFETY

CANDLE SAFETY:
According to the National Candle Association, Candle safety is an important consideration. "More than 15,000 candle fires are reported annually. According to fire experts, the bulk of candle-fire incidents are due to consumer inattention to basic fire safety or to the misuse of candles."

Here are some important safety notices about candles. Many of these things seem like common sense but a reminder is always a good thing:

Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep! Do not, under any circumstances, leave a candle unattended.

Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc. Be very careful if you wear robes with sleeves during ritual.

Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.

Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping. Trim your wick ONLY when the candle is extinguished.

Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to counters and table surfaces and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.

Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times. These things can easily catch fire.

Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire.

Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room or in a "tight" home where air exchange is limited.

Don't burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or ½ inch if in a container.

Never touch a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid. Wax is burning hot (especially dark colored waxes) and will burn you on contact.

Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use. You can easily crack your glass container which will make it unstable.

Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don't melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.

Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It's the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.

Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.

Make sure a candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.

Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn't burning properly and the flame isn't controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before re-lighting.

CASTING SPELLS WITHOUT CANDLES

Some who want to use magic can not burn candles on their magical altar, either due to circumstances beyond their control, or even for health reasons like disability or impairment. For others, candles may be impractical, such as a situation where one is working outdoors or for those who use an altar that is deconstructed and kept to a minimum of items. Well, as nice as candles are to use in magic, their use is certainly not required to be able to cast a spell.

First, here is a brief discussion of how candles are used in spells.

COLOR - Candles are available in a wide variety of colors. Each color is representative of the desired result, ie. red = lust, desire .. green = money

SHAPE - The candle itself is a symbol, a model of the phallic image and it represents will, power and energy. When candles are used properly, they become the focus of the ritual or spellwork, effectively concentrating and moving energy in the desired direction, much like the magic wand or the athame of some magical traditions.

Candles are available in a variety of shapes as well. There are round candles, square candles and even candles that are shaped like figures (figural candles). Basic spells are cast that are centered around the shape of the candle. For instance, a lover's spell can be cast by using a pillar or taper candle (long and skinny candles), but, an added and more focused effect is created by using a figural candle that is shaped in a human figure.

SIZE - The size of the candle that is used is also a consideration. A quick spell can be put together and cast by using a mini-candle and taper candles, which usually burn for a few hours or less, depending on the size. Ongoing spells or candles used for devotion are best cast by using a larger candle that can be burned and re-lit several times. Candles like these may take more than a few days to burn down.

INGREDIENTS - The ingredients that are used in candles and on candles, such as oils, are meant to add an extra effect. Oils or herbs are placed into the candle at the time of creation, or alternatively, candles are anointed during spell casting or ritual for magical effect.

USE - Candles are placed on the altar in designated areas, that denote what the purpose is for. In my altar arrangement, I use a center candle to cast my spells, and to the left of the center candle is my Bast statue, where I also burn candles on occasion. The appropriate candle is chosen before the spell is started and before the ritual begins. the candle is also empowered with intent and/or anointed with oils before it is lit. In working with two candles, I will light the first candle, and then light the second candle with the flame of the first candle that was lit, symbolically passing the flame from one candle to the other.

So, as you can see there are many ways that candles can be chosen, prepared and used in magical ritual. Doing without candles is no great sacrifice if you understand that the tools you use are representative of the effect that you want to create. All it requires is the use of basic, natural ingredients and a little creativity. So here are some suggestions to get you started.

- Talismans and Sigils. Create a talisman or sigil from natural ingredients like clay or paper. Use this talisman or sigil as a focus during spell casting. Use colored inks or colored paper for an intended effect.. No candle burning required.

- Herb Magic. Use an offering dish to place herbs into. the herbs act in much the same way that oils and candles do, as a representative of the forces that you are working with. Make a ritual tea (from SAFE and ingestible herbs such as mint or catnip..not all herbs are meant to be taken internally and some interfere with medication, so please research thoroughly) and as you create your tea and sip it during your ritual, focus on your result.

- Crystals. Meditation and focus with crystals and using their energies makes for a great method of casting magic. All one has to do is be familiar with crystals and their properties and be aware of how they are used.

- Ritual Oils. Some oils are safe to use on the skin, especially if they are diluted with a carrier oil such as jojoba, olive oil, or sesame. Ritual anointing with oil is a great way to absorb the qualities of an oil into your being. Be aware that some oils should never be put on the skin as they can irritate (cedar oil, cinnamon, orange oil etc.), and unless an oil is known to be food-grade (like almond oil made and specifically labeled for cooking) it should not be ingested or taken internally!

-Herbal Baths. There are specially made preparations for ritual baths that are created with sea salts, oils and herbs that are used as a magical bath. When used in spellwork they are like being anointed with the qualities that the bath contains.

-Magic Bags. Called magic bags, mojo bags, etc. they are like sachets which contain certain herbs, powders, gemstones, and possibly magical charms (symbolic charms). Placed in certain areas or kept on the person, they cause a magical effect to take place. For an example, If I were to make a sachet for gambling luck, i would put dice in it, and also some mint and patchouli herb, along with my lucky 2 dollar bill! Shazaam!

So, as you can see there are plenty of ways to create magical effects without using candles. For many, candles are a convenient way to cast spells, and are a focus of magical work, and for others, these methods that I've mentioned here are also great ways of creating magical spells.

HOW TO USE INCENSE POWDERS

Burning Powder and Resin incense is easy:
Incense represents the element of Fire and Air, a mixture of Will and enlightenment, and the energy of Lucifer. As the smoke rises from the heat of the flame, our consciousness is risen and awakened with the power of Air and scent. So, using Incense in a magical ritual adds a specific effect to your magical working. The equipment you will need is a pair of tweezers, a fire-proof incense container, a charcoal brick and powder or resin incense.

Charcoal Safety
Charcoal bricks are specially made for the purpose of burning incense. They are self-igniting and they get very hot. It is advisable that you protect any surfaces where you are burning incense and you burn them in a heat-proof container such as metal or sandstone container. I use a short sandstone dish and I fill it with sand and place my charcoal in the center, so it has a barrier of insulation around it.

Light your Charcoal
The best way to get your incense started is to hold the charcoal brick with your tweezers, and light it in the center of the brick until it becomes hot. Then place the brick into the container, (hot side up) and let it burn for a few minutes until the surface is gray with ash. This will ensure that your brick burns evenly. If you place the incense on a red-hot brick it will burn very fast or have a hard time igniting correctly.

Add your incense
Sprinkle your incense powder or resin onto the charcoal. Start out with a little bit at first because powders and resins can create a lot of smoke, even in small amounts. Do not pile the incense upon the charcoal, or it will not ignite or it could extinguish. Depending on the type of incense powder or resin, a little bit can go a long way.

Cleanup and Precautions
Never leave burning charcoal or incense unattended. Use caution when handing any kind of flame. A charcoal will burn very hot for many hours so be careful when you are discarding your ashes and wait at least 24hours to make sure that there are no hot coals that you are discarding that could potentially be hazardous.
